Artist's statement
This is the companion piece to The Sitting. Both images feature a direct gaze. But where The Sitting uses a period settee and full-body framing to establish painterly distance, this image moves in close and strips everything to face and shoulder. The effect is more immediate and more intimate.
The painterly backdrop has the mottled texture of a hand-painted canvas. The light is positioned to camera right, wrapped with diffusion, feathered to create a gentle gradient across the face. She is looking at you and deciding something, and the photograph catches the moment before the decision is made.
This image has the broadest wall appeal of the portrait-oriented work. It is accessible without being safe, direct without being aggressive, warm enough for residential interiors where the darker studio pieces would overwhelm.
