Artist's statement
The tulle was an afterthought. She had been standing in a black dress that was not working compositionally. I asked her to swap it for a length of sheer fabric, and she wrapped it around herself in a way that was neither deliberate nor accidental. The gesture was the image.
The diagonal sweep of the tulle creates the compositional energy, cutting across the frame from lower left to upper right, pulling the eye to her face. The direct gaze is steady but not confrontational. The choker adds a single point of decorative detail.
This demonstrates the Portrait series' interest in fabric and materiality as compositional elements. It provides tonal variety and introduces movement into a series that otherwise tends toward stillness.
