Artist's statement
A face behind leaves. One eye clear, the other occluded by a branch that falls across the bridge of the nose. The composition depends entirely on that partial obstruction: without it, this is a pleasant headshot. With it, the image becomes a study in concealment and disclosure.
The shallow depth of field dissolves the background into a dark wash while keeping the nearest leaves and the face in the same focal plane. The dappled light creates small highlights on the leaves that echo the catchlights in her eyes.
This quieter environmental piece grounds the Portrait series in the natural world and offers the opposite of the architectural darkness elsewhere: soft light, organic forms, a subject present but not fully revealed.
