Artist's statement

This is the most classically composed image in the Figure Study series. The pose quotes directly from the academic tradition of the life drawing room: seated contrapposto, one arm creating a vertical line while the legs fold into interlocking triangles.

The light is a single large source at forty-five degrees camera right, high enough to model the musculature with directional form shadow. The absolute black background is not empty. It is compressed, dense, a positive absence that gives the illuminated body its visual weight.

This image demonstrates the foundational skill on which everything else is built. Before you can deconstruct the figure or composite it into mythology, you must first prove you can light and compose a single body with a single source. This is that proof.
