Artist's statement
This image sits at the boundary between figure study and portraiture. The sheer lace dress creates a visible layer between the body and the viewer, a membrane that acknowledges the act of looking while refusing to resolve the question of what exactly is being shown.
The wooden fence provides a second set of verticals that interact with the figure's posture. I shot wide open to dissolve the fence into a rhythmic blur, keeping only the figure in focus.
This is the lightest image in the Figure Study series in both tone and mood. I need it because a series composed entirely of dark, heavy images becomes monotonous. This is the exhalation between held breaths.
