Artist's statement
I asked her to make herself as small as she could. Head down, knees in, arms wrapped. She folded herself into this shape in less than a second, and the result was a form so complete and self-contained that it read as both vulnerable and impregnable at the same time.
The low side light was positioned on the floor at camera left, angled upward to catch the ridge of the back while leaving the front of the body in complete shadow. The figure could be anyone. That anonymity is the point.
This pairs with After the Pose as a diptych of the same model in the same session: one image of opening and extension, one of closure and contraction. Together they describe the full emotional range of the Figure Study series.
