Artist's statement
This is the most intimate crop in the Portrait series. The frame excludes the eyes entirely, leaving geometry: the diagonal of the collarbone, the parallel thin straps falling from shoulder to chest, the lace edge that traces a boundary the eye is invited to follow but not cross.
The downward tilt of the head creates a posture of self-regard. The light is soft and directional from camera right, modelling the clavicle with enough shadow to give the skin sculptural dimension.
A portrait does not require eyes to function. Sometimes a shoulder and a strap and a downward glance are enough.
